Church Street Baptist Church is an independent Baptist church. It was first formulated as Bible Baptist Church in a storage building on Yanceyville Street in Greensboro, NC. A few people (12 adults and children) were the first charter members.
The church was organized on September 24, 1967, by Rev. J. William Kanoy, then pastor of Community Baptist Church in Mebane, NC. A few months later this church body moved to the basement of the Gregory home, members of the church, located on Church Street.
On October 15, 1967, Rev J. William Kanoy became the pastor of Bible Baptist Church. The church quickly grew, and began to search for property to build on. The pastor of the Broadview Methodist Church, located on Church Street, called Rev. Kanoy and offered to sell their church building, fellowship hall, and pastorium. After much prayer, this property along with additional property was purchased for future use.

On Mother’s Day of 1968 the church moved into the old Methodist church building. The name of the church was then changed to Church Street Baptist Church. Some of the most blessed times our church has experienced were in that old Methodist church. God’s presence was so real and many souls were saved for which we will forever be thankful, and we must give God all the credit and glory.
In September 1969, construction began on a new church building. God blessed the church and in April 1970, we moved into our new church home. Additional property was purchased and in September 1973, plans and construction were begun to build a fellowship building adjacent to the church property and to house the Greensboro Bible Institute.
The Greensboro Bible Institute, since 1968, has been training men and women in the eternal truths of God’s word as a testimony to the burden of the late Dr. Kanoy.
Dr. Kanoy was a recognized evangelist, author and teacher. He was president of the Greensboro Bible Institute and pastor of the church for 28 years. He served in the ministry for over 46 years. On May 18, 1995, Dr. Kanoy went home to be with the Lord.
Prior to his death, Dr. Kanoy had recommended Dr. Keith Purser, Pastor of Bible Baptist Church in Ellijay, GA, be as a candidate for Pastor of Church Street Baptist Church. In July 1995, Dr. Purser met with the church and was called as Pastor on August 13, 1995.
In January 2002, due to the continuous growth of the church, plans were approved to build a new fellowship hall adjacent to the Bible Institute. In December 2006, Dr. Purser resigned as Pastor to accept the call from the New Birth Baptist Church in Georgia.
After seeking a new pastor and God’s will for many months, the church voted in July 2007 to call Dr. Art McGahan as Interim Pastor to assist the church during this transition period while we continued to search for a new permanent pastor. On January 6, 2013 the church voted to call Bro. Tyler Gaulden as its new pastor.
To God be the glory for great things He has done.
